Guided imagery has long been considered an integral strategy for acute pain coping. However, the bulk of guided imagery research has focused on relaxation based imagery. Stress inoculation theories of resilience suggest that positive pain learning experiences may establish resilience resources to be called upon when individuals are faced with pain, though this may be dependent on conscious awareness of these memories. The current study used a within-subjects design to examine the effect of a resilience-focused guided imagery intervention, which prompted participants to remember a situation in which they positively adapted to pain.
